On wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall. It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of the people had gathered under the Town Hall clock. It would strike twelve in twenty minutes’ time. Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big minute hand did not move. We waited and waited, but nothing happened. Suddenly someone shouted, ‘It’s two minutes past twelve! ’ I looked at my watch. It was true. The big clock refused to welcome the New Year. At that moment, everybody began to laugh and sing.

星期三的晚上，我们去了市政厅。那是一年的最后一天，一大群人聚集在市政厅的大钟下面，再过20分钟，大钟将敲响12下。15分钟过去了，而就是11：55分时，大钟停了。那根巨大的分针不动了，我们等啊等啊，可情况没有变化。突然有人喊道：“已经12：02了！ 那钟已经停下来了！” 我看了一下我的手表，果真如此，那座大钟不愿意迎接新年。此时，大家已经笑了起来，同时唱起了歌。

    不一定都指人群也可以指向其他群体。

    minute hand 分针

    hour hand 时针

    second hand 秒针，二手

  4. shout v. 喊叫

  5. refuse v. 拒绝

    refuse sb./sth. 拒绝某人/某事

    refuse to do sth. 拒绝去做某事

  6. laugh v. 笑 一般指大笑

    smile 微笑

    laugh at sb 嘲笑某人

  7. true adj. 真实的

    truth n. 事实，真相

    false adj. 不真实的，错误的

语法

介词

  1. 介词要接词，不能单独使用
  2. 介词只能接三种词。名词/代词/动名词
  3. 构成一个短语介宾结构

表示时间的介词：

  1. in

    in 1992/January/summer 后面加比较大的时间段

    in the morning/afternoon/evening

    It would strike twelve in twenty minutes’time

    搭配将来时表示在多长时间之后。

  2. on

    表示在某一天上发生了什么事，通常搭配天

    on wednesday evening

    重点放在天上

    on the morning of july 7 th

    不管天反在什么地方都使用on

  3. at

    后面接具体某一时间

    at 8 o’clock/8:00

    at midnight/noon

    at night

  4. before

    表示在……时间之前

  5. after

    表示在……时间之后

  6. since

    表示自从……时候开始

  7. until

    表示直到……时间

  8. during

    表示在……时间段里面

  9. for

    持续了一段时间

  10. by

截止到……时间

  1. from……till/to……

从几点到几点

不规则变化
